chronicle: chronicle: [14] English has a number of words derived from Greek khrónos ‘time’, among them chronology [16], chronometer ‘timepiece’ [18], and crony. English took it over, and restored the Latin ch- spelling in the 16th century.

Ending modified in Anglo-French, perhaps by influence of article. Old English had cranic "chronicle," cranicwritere "chronicler." The classical -h- was restored in English from 16c.
